CHURCHILL, WINSTON
An interesting collection of correspondence relating to the former British Prime Minister and the Maharaja of Dholphur. In the letter written to his cousin George Spencer-Churchill Churchill writes on a single sheet of House of Commons embossed stationery headed "67 Westminster Gardens, S.W.1" and dated 18th August 1945 "My dear George, Thank you so much for letting me see the letter from the Maharaja of Dholpur. I return it to you herewith. Please write him the following from me: I am most grateful for your kind expressions. Please have no fears. All will be well." Signed at the close in black fountain pen ink "Yours Affect, W". In this letter Churchill is referring to his defeat at the 1945 general election. Accompanying this piece are two typed letters from the Maharaja to George Spencer-Churchill. In the letter dated 1945 the Maharaja write of Churchill's 'painful' defeat at the general election paying lengthy tribute to Churchill's wartime leadership and expressing his sense of disappointment in British democracy "The man who did all that has been ousted with his party by the senseless vote of Mobocracy". The other letter written in 1953 he expresses his genuine delight in Churchill's re-election. An interesting collection of correspondence sold together with an official envelope from the Prime Minister with a typed address to George Spencer-Churchill postmarked 6th May 1953.

A very unique memorabilia item. An original typescript of Churchill's answer to a Parliamentary question by Colonel Lyons on the supply of material and munitions by Britain to USSR on two pages, war-dated 10th May 1944. The typescript bears autographed revisions in Churchill's hand in red ink consisting of 27 words. A typescript answer to a possible supplementary question on the despatch of civil supplies accompanies the speech, as does a typescript "Statement for circulation in the official report in answer to Parliamentary question by Colonel Lyons" including a two page list of military supplies to the USSR (3 pages). Between August 1941 and the spring of 1945, approx. forty Arctic convoys, coded "PQ", made the long voyage from British ports to North Russia - Archangel and Murmansk. The decision by the British Government in August 1941 to send military supplies to her new ally, was as much for political reasons and to boost morale as to provide any really significant military assistance. Our typescript provides an impressive list of British military supplies to the Soviet Union (in part): " between 1 October 1941 and 31 March 1944 we have supplied (...) 5,031 tanks, (...) vehicles 4,020, 9,778 aircraft, (...) total value of (...) raw materials £28,115,000, (...) total value of foodstuffs supplied £7,223,000 (...)". The typescript was given by Churchill to Sir Peter Agnew, MP (1900-1990), who served in the Royal Navy. Agnew's copy of his letter of thanks to Churchill, also dated 10 May 1944, accompanies the typescript.

A thank you letter from Sir Winston Churchill typed on Chartwell headed note paper. Dated November 25 1948 this typed letter is on 'Chartwell' headed paper, the country home of the Churchill family. In the letter Churchill thanks Mr Willy Sax for a 'beautiful box which will exactly suit my needs", "whether going abroad or painting in the studio. I am most grateful to you for your kindness". Churchill signs off with a clear signature to the centre of the page. Willy Sax was a paint manufacturer. The letter has the usual archive folds associated with such pieces, however these are clear of the signature which is immaculate. A lovely memento of the Churchill era.
