Image: CATHERINE THE GREAT
CATHERINE THE GREAT
Flush with victory over the Turks, Catherine the Great moves Russians into the lands of the Crimea recently gained from the Ottoman empire. Letter signed as Empress, in Russian, 1 page small 4to, Tsarskoe Selo, March 20, 1792, to Mikhailo Vasilievich. Catherine writes: "From the enclosed copies of our Saint Ukases (transl. note: decrees) to the Governors of Yekaterinoslav and Tauride you will see our command to expedite the settling of the people of our faith (transl. note: members of Edinoverie) on the Black Sea shore. They are expected to be travelling to the waters of the Black Sea with the Archipelago flotilla. Inform General Major Tamar as soon as possible so that he can order the necessary arrangements for thos who will be sent. You remain in our good graces. Catherine." In fine condition. Russia's second long war with the Turks resulted in the gaining of lands in eastern Europe as well as the Crimea, and she apparently wanted to waste no time settling the latter.
