American murderer of John Lennon on 8th December 1980. A typed letter on one page, dated 17th August 1988 on lined sheet of paper, to Roy Deeley, with largely religious content. Accompanied by original mailing envelope and a small brochure entitled "Have you heard of the Four Spiritual Laws" signed and inscribed by Chapman to the verso.

Legendary U.S showman (1810-91) famed for his flamboyant and innovative publicity built upon his central philosophy that 'there's a sucker born every minute'. In 1871, after a varied career as a promoter Barnum continued the success of his New York 'museum' by taking to the road with 'The Greatest Show on Earth' comprising of a circus, menagerie and an exhibition of freaks including 'General Tom Thumb' all conveyed from city to city by 100 railroad cars. A lined white page (approx. 6x12cm) with a fountain pen inscription in black ink which reads 'Truly Yours P. T. Barnum. American Museum New York Feb 4th 1865. To Simmon W. Stone'. A remarkable piece in fine general condition with single fold and very light smudging, neither of which effect the signature itself.

Autographed letter signed, one page, 5.75x9, personal letterhead, May 16, 1889. Barnum writes to the Connecticut Telephone Company. In full: 'Please let me have two speaking tube telephones and transmitters from my house across the road to my barn on my own premises.' After signing, Barnum adds the notation 'Lease 32350'. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold slightly touching "P"), files holes, and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. A most unusual association between the great showman and early telephony!

A three quarter page handwritten letter signed 'W.F. Cody' at the close in fine black ink, on headed stationary for the Rensselaer Hotel in Troy, New York, July 7th, 1907. He writes in dire financial straits to Joseph T. McCaddon, business manager of the Cody & Bailey Co., 'As per your telegram of yesterday, that you would send me a check for $5000 - tomorrow Monday. Instead of sending me the check, if you will use it by kindly sending it with some one tomorrow Monday to take up my note for 5000 at the Astor Trust Company bank. And if you will please telegraph me on receipt of this, so as to relieve my mind I will be very much obliged. I enclose check for $75' (not present) 'to pay the interest.' With binder holes at top and minor stains in upper margin, otherwise in very good condition. Accompanied by a type-written letter signed by Astor Trust Co. teller on the company's imprinted stationary, New York, June 28, 1907, informing Cody that his note and the interest are due on July 7. Also with three Western Union Telegrams, all from McCaddon, two to Cody, and one his manager, F.B. Hutchinson regarding the matter. Because of mismanagement Cody often found himself financially strapped despite the fortune brought in by his popular show, which was ultimately lost to creditors.

A superb head & shoulder studio portrait photo of William F. Cody (approx 9.5 x 7.5"). Signed "W.F. Cody Buffalo Bill, to my old friend Jack Gardner 1915"captioned on lower apart of the image in black fountain pen. Cody is wearing an elaborately embroidered and fringed jacket with a wide brim hat. A few crease along the edges of the photograph and on the left hand of the image a half inch tear. The w and jac in Jack have faded but otherwise in good condition.

FARGO, WILLIAM & WELLS, HENRY
Businessmen Henry Wells (1805-1878) and William Fargo (1818-1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American west, and, indeed, became still-familiar household words. Partially printed DS, one page both sides, 11.75 x 8, April 23, 1863. An handsomely engraved certificate for one share of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to Alexander Thompson of Aurora, signed 'Henry Wells' as President and 'Wm. G. Fargo' as Secretary. In very good condition, with a few unobtrusive pinholes and tiny edge tears, mild scattered toning and rippling, light vertical folds touching signatures, and slight trimming to left edge. The signatures are clear and dark.
