PATTON, GEORGE S.
In the midst of World War II, General George S Patton, wrote a letter to Suzanne Miner, who had served as his housekeeper in Langres, France, during World War I...Patton starts the letter "I was delighted to get your letter" and continues "I'm sure that you will be happy to know that the French and ourselves are very intimate" and Patton goes on to say "I have not met here any girls as charming as you and your sister". Patton compliments Ms Miner on her English whilst joking at his own lack of command of the French language "I am sure that if you had not been such a clever girl you would not have understood me, particularly when I wrote". The letter measures 8 x 10.5 inches and is dated January 23, 1943 and bears a clean and crisp Patton signature.

Image: PATTON, GEORGE S.
PATTON, GEORGE S.
Early handwritten letter signed on page, 5x6.5", June 16, 1904, West Point, to his mother whom he addresses "Dear Mama". Patton writes "This place is fine it is easier so far then the V.M.I [Virginia Military Institute] and all the corps are very nice. I sit at the mess of a California Corp. named Bain and he treats me very nicely". Signed "with love, George". In excellent condition. Patton attended Virginia Military Institute for one year, then transferred to West Point. He flunked out after but re-entered to graduate in 1909. Patton was an intelligent child, intensively studying classical literature and military history from a young age, but likely suffered from an undiagnosed dyslexia, the consequences of which would haunt him throughout his schooling. He learned to read at a very late age as a child, and never learned basic skills such as correct spelling. This meant that it took Patton five years to graduate from West Point, although he managed to rise to Adjutant of the Corps of cadets.

Image: CROMWELL, OLIVER
CROMWELL, OLIVER
English military and republican leader best known for his involvement in making England into a Republican Commonwealth and for his later role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. A manuscript document, one page, folio, dated at Whitehall, London, 1st January 1656. The document reads: "Our will, and pleasure is that you forthwith appoint a Frigot to repayre to Our port of Rye, thence to secure on board a person who is immediately to be transported into France... at Whitehall this 1 of January 1656". The document is signed on the top of the paper in huge scroll as 'Oliver P', standing for the symbol of Lord Protector. At the bottom left is written: "To our right... the Commissioner of Our Admiralty & Nayve". A very rare and most beautiful historic document. In 1654 Cromwell had opened his first Parliament of the Protectorate, but by the spring of 1655 he had shut down, and instituted an almost total military government. He changed the laws governing social behaviour and speech, severely restricting the citizenry in every way. He also began arresting and imprisoning individuals for suspected anti-Protectorate activity. Cromwell, who possessed absolute power in England, issued an order for one of his Commissioners to choose a ship and proceed to the Port of Rye, England, to board an unspecified person and deliver him to France. Within two years, in 1658, Cromwell himself would be dead.

CROMWELL, OLIVER
Incredibly rare signed document circa 1650. A bold ink signature signed by the Lord Protector circa 1650. The signature is on a piece that has been neatly removed from the conclusion of a letter. The signature is very fine and clear. Documents of this era are incredibly scarce; few have survived the 359 years in-between. To find a signature in this condition is very rare.

FALKLANDS WAR - SOUTH GEORGIA
The note that began the countdown to the Falklands War - one page, original message dictated by Rex Hunt, Governor of the Falkland Islands, over the radio to Trevor Edwards of the British Antarctic Survey, and to him by the Argentine expedition that had landed on South Georgia, headed 'SAT. MARCH 20TH 1982/ FROM/ THE GOVENOR OF THE FALKLANDS ISLANDS': "You Have Landed illegally at LEITH Without Obtaining Proper clearance./ You and Your Party must go back on board the BAHIA BUEN SUCESO immediately and report to BASE COMMANDER at GRYTVIKEN for further instructions./ You must remove the ARGENTINE flag from LEITH./ You MUST NOT interfere with the B.A.S. depot at LEITH./ You MUST NOT alter or deface any of the notices at LEITH./ NO military personnell are allowed to land in SOUTH GEORGIA./ NO FIREARMS are to be taken ashore./ GOVENOR OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS" Written in green ballpoint pen on lightweight paper, folio, one or two barely discernable stains, presumably rising from having been handled during negotiations with the Argentine party. Presented in archival mounting. The document discovered by Neil Shaw, a member of the British Antarctic Survey, when going through his diary at the time. It was recently displayed at the National Army Museum to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the war. According to Shaw's diary, his party set off on 18th March 1982 to visit the whaling stations and complete some maintenance work at Leith. The following day they noticed that BAS depot had been ransacked, and that 'a number of personnel' were there, with the Argentine flag flying. That evening they alerted the authorities and awaited their reply. On 20 march his diary records: "Made radio contact at 5.30am, message relayed to us from the Governor of the Falkland Islands, searching the building for a pen and paper and wrote his message down. Trevor and I took this on board the ship again. The message was read out to the ships captain, he explained that they were working with a man called Davidoff and he had clearance to come ashore from the Argentine Government. I took the letter and we left." (NAM release). According to Shaw's later recollection: "We took the note to the ship and read it to an interpreter, who read it to the captain. They took the note and gave it back to us, dismissing it quite quickly. They said, 'If you'd like to come in for a meal and drink, you're welcome, but we're not interested in this' "(Guardian, 18 March 2007). Argentine troops landed in the Falklands on 2 April, and the following day the BAS party were taken captive.

Image: GORDON, CHARLES
GORDON, CHARLES
A beautiful 4x2.5" rare document signed by British soldier Gordon. A stunnining piece written strikingly in Arabic. The note reads; "This sum is accepted and will be paid by the Treasury in Khartoum or Cairo, time, six months after today...." Gordon's notes were burned and possession of such notes was a punishable offense. A very limited amount of Gordon's notes made it out of Africa - baring his items to be very rare and essential collector's pieces. Signed at the bottom in a light pen with Gordon's personal seal stamped in light green above his signature. A slight tear on the upper right corner and color distoration of the document, however - readable and otherwise in fine condition.
