HEMINGWAY, ERNEST
Hemingway inscribes an autograph in English and Italian for a Milan visitor to arguably the most famous bar in the world, Havana’s La Florida, as he, undoubtedly, sipped his daiquiri from his personal, outsized glass. Autograph Sentiment Signed Ernest Hemingway, one page, 3.5x 5.5". Havana, Cuba, 1950s. Penned on a blank bar bill. Affixed onto a mat by four transparent picture corners. Matted with 6.75x9.5" Karsh photograph of Hemingway, framed under glass. Overall size, 18.75x16". Fine condition. In full, To Herman Bosse / (de Milano) / Best always / (con migliore auguri) / Ernest Hemingway. On a printed bar bill form imprinted at top: Bar. Restaurant / ‘La Florida’ / Cuna Del Daiquiri [Cradle of the Daiquiri] / Cocktail / C. Ribalaigua y Co. / Ave de Belgia y Obispo / Telfs. M-5031 y A-0004 / La Habana, Cuba. Imprinted year is 195_. A 1950s guide book described the bar thusly, Floridita, Obispo & Monserrate (M-5031). The Floridita (Formerly known as La Florida) claims to have originated the daiquiri (named after a Cuban river). It has developed daiquiri-making into an art, and provides half a dozen different types. Most famous daiquiri customer at Floridita: Ernest Hemingway, who uses a special out-sized glass. The place also has an excellent restaurant. About this photograph, Karsh is quoted in David Travis’s Regarding Heroes (Jaffrey, N.H.: David R. Godine, 2009): I expected to meet in the author a composite image of his creations. Instead, in 1957, at his home near Havana, I found a man of peculiar gentleness, the shyest of men I ever photographed. Therein, I imagine, lies the secret of his work. He has felt in his soul, with lonely anguish, the tragedy of our species, he’s expressed it in his writing, but for self-protection has built around himself a wall of silence and myth. I discovered that he had a wonderful smile alive, kindly, and full of understanding. But on developing my negatives, I liked best the portrait printed here. It is, I think, a true portrait, the face of a giant cruelly battered by life, but invincible.
