COLERIDGE, SAMUEL TAYLOR
A one page, four sided handwritten letter signed, to Coleridge's brother George, a spirited and light hearted missive, with family news and in-jokes about his brother Edward (whose 'puns are very bad' and whose wife calls George 'her friend'), on is forthcoming visit to his brother James (whom he will not visit later 'on account of his Sidmouthianism') and his anticipation of George's coming to Ottery. Reads in part "...your presence, like the Sun, will relax the frost of my genius, and like a cathartic, purify it of all obstructions, so that I expect to flow away in a bloody flux of poetry...". Image: CONAN DOYLE, ARTHUR
CONAN DOYLE, ARTHUR
Scottish author, whose stories featuring fictional detective Sherlock Holmes revolutionised the genre of crime fiction. Holmes himself would eventually earn a place among the most familiar and durable characters in the annals of English literature, and his exploits would inspire countless incarnations on stage and screen. Handwritten, calling card signed 'A. Conan Doyle,' 4.5 x 3.5, April 31. Doyle writes to Mrs. Alley. In full: 'I should have very much liked to have seen the General and you but I am stuck down here for the week & can’t get up to town. I hope he is very well. I am so very glad you both like the history. If he cares to blue pencil any of it I should be very interested. I sent him a copy out to France of this number'. In addition to his famed Sherlock Holmes tales, Doyle wrote a number of volumes on military history. British officer Barnett D. L. G. Alley (1873-1954) is mentioned in at least two: The Great Boer War (1900) and The British Campaign in France and Flanders (1916). Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Doyle’s hand. In very fine condition. (WOHE10)

Image: HEGEL, GEORGE WILHELM
HEGEL, GEORGE WILHELM
Autograph Letter Signed, in German, two pages 4to, Berlin, November, 3, 1830. A lengthy, rare letter to Johann Martin Daniel Wohlfahrt, priest in Gehren, Uckermark, (1773-1837). This priest was looking for someone who had finished his exams and wanted to get a job as a house teacher. Hegel recommends Mr. Boos. "I am very grateful that you thought of me and showed me your benevolence in your kind writing of the 15th of last month. Following your wish, I looked around for a student who had just graduated and who was willing to assume a position as elementary teacher. Mr. Boos, who had been previously unknown to me, is said to be a bright and decent young man of flawless behaviour and lively character, and he comes highly recommended. His sensible, respectable demeanour, lacking all pretence, confirmed this description to me. He believes himself up to the task of teaching music but no French. If I may say so, the expectations are significant compared to the salary. He will write to Your Honour himself, or has no doubt done so already. I hope that the situation will continue to develop to your and your patron's satisfaction and ask you to leave any further requests to me. With my respect to Your Honour’s kindness". Signed, "Your servant, Prof. Hegel.” This letter is written in bold ink, causing one small burn whole in the paper. It also has one clean tear in part of the text, but no text is missing. With integral address leaf. A superb and rare letter, written late in life when he was rector in a Berlin school. Here he is recommending a student and discusses the traits that would satisfy a Priest. Letters by Hegel are rare. (WOHE10)
