A 10x8, (landscape), half length, black and white photograph of Haile Selaisse, born Prince Ras Tafari at the foot of a flight of aeroplane stairs shaking hands with another, signed across a lighter portion of the image in blue ink and dated 1954. Emperor of Ethiopia (1930--6, 1941--74) he led the revolution in 1916 against Lij Yasu, becoming regent and heir to the throne, westernising the country. He settled in England after the Italian conquest of Abyssinia (1935--6), but in 1941 was restored after British liberation. In the early 1960s he helped to establish the Organisation of African Unity. He was deposed following the disastrous Ethiopian famine of 1973. A superb example of a rare and sought after signature, mounted, framed and glazed.
