American dance pioneer (1877-1927), Duncan is best known as one of the founders of modern dance who encouraged a spontaneous and personal style of dance. After European concert successes she founded schools of dancing in Germany, the USSR and the US. Her premature death in 1927 came as a shock to the artistic community in Europe, while riding in an open sports car, Duncan was strangled when the scarf around her neck became caught in a wheel. We have a charming paperweight photographic portrait of Duncan, signed across a lower portion of the image in black fountain pen ink, with an inscription in French, dated September 1913. Measures 154x105mm and is unframed. An excellent example of a rare and highly sought after signature.
